Finding The Best Credit Card Offers

Probably the most common type of junk mail you get will be credit card offers, at least in your mailbox at home. You can even get these in your junk mail through your Internet connection as well. These offers can be good, but some of them are not as beneficial as they appear when you read them. The trick is to take each of these offers, do the research, and then read the fine print to find out which are truly the best credit card offers that you can get. That way, you know you are getting the best.

You may find that the best credit card offers are not the ones that come to you out of the blue. You may get them when you have bad credit, and those are the ones that you have to watch out for the most. These often look good, and those that have not had a chance to get credit cards may jump at these offers. That can often be a mistake. Reading the fine print can often be an eye opener in these cases. There are always hidden fees and very high interest rates. No one can tell you what to do, of course, but think long and hard before you sign up.

When you have good credit, you are going to have much more say in how much you pay in interest and even what your limits might be. You may think that some of the best credit card offers are the ones that offer you unlimited credit, but that is rarely the case. When you have a limit, you know you are not spending more than that at any time. That means you can better manage your spending in many cases. Unless you have money to burn, the unlimited offers are not the best credit card offers for most families.

You can turn your current cards into some of the best offers for credit cards. That means that you can call the company, providing you have a good record of making payments on time, to see if they can get you a better interest rate. Tell them that you have been looking through some of the best credit card offers that have come to you, and you are thinking about switching to someone else unless they can help you out by at least matching what others are offering. In many cases, this works, but be prepared to follow through if they don’t bite. It is your financial future that you should worry about, not loyalty to a company that refuses to work with you.

If you need to get a credit card for your business, of course you are going to want to make sure that you get a low interest business credit card. Keep in mind when you want to get a low interest business credit card, just as there is for a student credit card, there is a list of different credit cards that are considered as being the top picks and which you are definitely going to want to consider first.

Top Picks

When it comes to choosing a low interest business credit card, there are a few in particular that you are going to want to consider. There is the Advanta Platinum with Unlimited Rewards low interest business credit card which you may want to consider. This card gives you a choice between a cash rebate program and a business reward program which is really great.

As well, it offers the feature of having a very low APR and probably the best balance transfer deal in the market today, which is quite impressive.

Another great option would be the CitiBusiness card, which is a basic business credit card that appeals to small business owners who are looking for a credit card that has a 0% APR balance transfer and cardholders will also get access to business credit lines, which will depend on your business and credit history.

Then there is also the Chase Business Rebate Card, which is an ideal business credit card. This card will appeal to the small business owner who is looking for a cash rebate business credit card, and it offers many benefits that other cards do not. For one, it allows the cardholder to earn 3% rebates on purchases at restaurants, office supply stores, gas stations, building supply stores, home improvement stores and more.

The bottom line is that not all business credit cards are equal, and so in order to get a low interest business credit card, you are definitely going to need to put some time and thought into this process and ensure that you are getting the best possible card for your business and needs.

Also remember that the business credit cards discussed here are certainly not the only ones, so in order to ensure that you are choosing just the right credit card for your business, you are going to want to check out what else is out there as well, and do some comparing.

Credit Cards Rewards

Though credit cards are a bit of a danger in hard economic times, there is no reason why you can’t have one if you are financially fit, have plenty in the bank, and you know that you can make the most of one. Having a card does make life easier as long as you know you can handle it. You have many options when getting such a card, and you should weigh them carefully. You should always consider the interest rate you are going to get first and foremost, and then you can think about things like credit cards with rewards. Think of these rewards as a bonus.

When considering the credit cards with rewards that you want, understand that they are not going to be as good right now as they have been in the past. You can thank the economic downturn for that. However, they are still out there - they are just a little harder to get. What you want to do is to think about what would work out the best for you. There is no sense in getting credit cards with rewards of airline miles if you have no intentions of traveling any time soon, even if you had enough to points to get substantial savings on the airfare.

There are different types of credit cards with rewards that you can consider. What you want to do is think about savings in a time like this. Is there a card that you have found that has a good interest rate for you and your credit situation that offers you cash back and/or savings rewards? For many of us right now, these are the very best credit cards with rewards that you can get and take advantage of. What you have to think about is how much you are going to save and if it is worth it at all in your case.

Your spending habits are going to determine which credit cards with rewards are going to work best for you. If you spend a lot on your cards, these rewards can work out great for you, though remember they are not going to balance out spending that you simply can not afford. If you make just a few purchases with your card, you have to take that into consideration when choosing your credit card rewards choices. Things will be clear when you think it over.

The problem that some people have is that they do not think it over when choosing credit cards with rewards. That is when they run into trouble because they are not getting what they thought they were. They see the offer and jump on it without looking at others or really reading the terms and the fine print. Make no mistake, there are some really great credit cards with rewards out there from which you can choose, you just have to choose the one that is going to be the very best deal for you and your unique life situation.

Unless yours is perfect, you need a better credit score! Here’s how …

When banks declare, post bailout – er, rescue, that they won’t even loan to each other, it becomes abundantly clear that we all need to get a better credit score if we are to have a chance of the proverbial snowball in obtaining future credit.

Despite the obvious fact that it’s us taxpayers who are ultimately going to pay for this rescue plan, it’s also objectively clear that making a project of getting a better credit score goes on our short list of things to do. It can take quite a while to clean up a credit report. Know, too, that there’s a good likelihood you’ll come across an item or two which doesn’t even belong to you. Emergencies can arise, requiring a loan. Your car gives up the ghost. You need a new roof and it’s raining. That sort of thing.

Your first step is to get a current copy of your credit report. Everyone is entitled to one free report each year. You can obtain it online or at the Credit Bureau office. Look it over carefully to be sure all of the information listed is accurate. Be sure every item belongs to you.

Should you have a dispute with any entry that appears on your credit report, address each item immediately, as it may take some time to correct.

If you’ve got several maxed-out credit cards and/or you’re using one credit card to pay another, not only are you getting deeper in debt, but this will not result in a better credit score. These patterns on your credit report become transparent to a potential lender who takes a look at your credit. Your best bet is to visit an organization that provides debt consolidation services.

If your credit cards are not maxed out, stop using them. Reserve the use of the one with the most credit remaining for dire emergency use only.

Call your credit card companies and try to negotiate a more favorable APR. Making payments to credit card companies is best done online or over the phone, because you then have a confirmation number for the transaction. Some unethical companies have been exposed by whistle blowers to deliberately delay a payment’s processing for a day after receipt in the mail, just so they can tack on a late fee. This single tip helps you avoid the late fees and can do much to get you a better credit score.

Scrimp and save as much as possible so that you can pay more than the minimum payment on the card with the highest debt and least favorable lending rate. Consider also, that if this describes your situation, debt consolidation might be a good move for you.

By the time you’ve cleared up any discrepancies on your credit report information and taken the steps that will best serve your situation, you’re on your way to a much better credit score.

You know first hand what a pain, bother and worry it is to get in a financial mess, think about teaching your kids how credit and credit cards work in the real world. They need to understand personal finances. Otherwise, they won’t read the fine print, twelve page disclosure brochure that comes in their statement either. It’s certain they’ll have a better credit score themselves, as a result.

If you have, or are considering applying for, an airline credit card, you need to ask yourself two questions:

1. Are benefits available from the largest airline in my area?

2. Which airline credit card can I use to reap the benefits quickly?

An airline sponsored credit card only allows you to focus on one specific airline. If that particular airline controls the majority of the destination routes from your area, it will give you convenience and efficiency and it will be extremely economical. Bank sponsored credit cards allow you more freedom. Why? Because the air miles that you accumulate can be used on a wide range of airlines. If you have no airline in your area that controls the majority of destination routes, this is the card that will be most beneficial to you. Another advantage is that often the minimum amount of air miles required before you can use them for travel is lower than with an airline sponsored card. However, use extreme caution. Bank sponsored credit cards are subject to a lot of fine print.

Membership and annual fees can vary greatly for different types of cards. Most major credit card companies offer standard, gold and platinum air miles credit cards. Keep in mind that the better the option, the higher the fees. Gold and platinum cards offer high credit limits but membership and annual fees are also higher and these add up quickly. Most major credit card companies offer introductory air miles cards with 0 % interest. Why? Because they want your credit card business. If interest rates are of concern for you, an air miles card should not be the card you choose because interest rates tend to be very high. Many air miles credit cards have a minimum number of miles that have to accumulate before you receive a free or discounted trip. Be sure to read the fine print and then read it again. Be sure you understand all of the stipulations.

If you travel frequently for business or pleasure, air miles cards can be very beneficial. With these types of cards, you use your credit card to purchase all necessary goods and services. In return, you accumulate rewards in the form of points and then you redeem them for air miles. You then use the air miles to get free or discounted trips to the destination of your choice. As an added incentive, airline credit cards often offer bonus air miles at selected stores, or on specific travel destinations. Usually, both airline and bank sponsored cards give bonus air miles when you sign with their company.

There are some disadvantages to having an air miles card. Usually these cards, as mentioned earlier, have much higher interest rates than standard cards, which can add up quickly if you don’t pay the entire balance off each month. Another disadvantage is that these cards are often used for unnecessary purchases in order to accumulate points to be exchanged for air miles. As with all credit cards, air miles credit cards have to be used responsibly in order for the cardholder to reap the benefits.

Besides the long string of numbers that identify your account, there is a short little series of numbers that makes up your card’s expiration date. Most of us don’t even pay any attention to that date, but you can bet that the credit card approval network knows exactly when your card expires, and for good reason. Actually, there are several reasons, so let’s take a look.
Top Reasons Why a Credit Card Has an Expiration Date

One of the most simple and uncomplicated reasons the credit card will expire is that the magnetic strip will not last forever. Although the plastic card itself is virtually indestructible, the magnetic strip is a little touchier and will eventually wear out. When that happens your card will no longer be readable by credit card terminals and ATMs.

Some institutions use an expiration date as a way of reconnecting with the cardholder. It gives the company and the user the opportunity to get together and discuss any issues or complaints that the customer may have. It also allows the card company to appear to care about you as a customer. They will send you a friendly reminder, kindly offering you the chance to renew with your same comfortable company. With all the competition out there, comfort and history can go a long way in keeping customers.

Cardholder security is another reason. This allows the company to check up on you and make sure you are who you say you are and nothing has changed. With identity theft being what it is today, this is a good thing. Some people have had credit cards opened in their names without their knowledge and charges have been made. If the card expires, the company will contact you and possibly warn you about current fraud trends.

The company may use the expiration date as a way to remind you they are there. For people who don’t use their cards very often, this can be a gentle reminder of just what’s in their wallet and, hopefully, remind you to use it.
Nearing The Expiration Date

It is actually quite easy to renew your card. About a month before your current card actually expires, a new one will suddenly appear in the mail to replace your expired one. This is great if you’re in town. If you are going to be traveling, check your card before you go. If it will expire before you get back, call ahead and get your new one before you leave.

Once you have your new card, read the material that came with it. This may very well include a list of new and improved terms. If you find these terms to be new, but not improved, contact the card company. Do not use the card until you have received verification that the terms have been changed to your approval. If they refuse, you can always cancel the card. Trust me, it won’t take long to find a replacement.

Unfortunately, wallets and purses do get stolen or lost on a regular basis. Your biggest concern is usually the fact that your credit cards are missing. If this happens to you, do you have a plan of action? Well, you should. It really isn’t as daunting to come up with a credit card action plan as it seems like it should be. All reputable credit card companies have a set policy that helps to protect you against loss or theft. All you need to know is how to get this policy to work for you.
Help! My Credit Card Was Stolen!

Never fear, help is here! The first thing you need to do is report the stolen card to the company as soon as possible. Most companies have a toll-free number or an online service that deals solely with this problem.

Fortunately for you, federal law dictates that you are only liable for the first $50.00 of any fraudulent charges made on a charge card. Still, you are required to report the lost or stolen card even though you’re not going to take a huge hit. Here’s a little extra incentive to make the call fast: If you report the loss or theft before any unauthorized use, you don’t even pay the $50.00.

Many card issuers are waiving the $50 exposure, so check the details on your credit card offer.

After the card is gone, make sure you pay attention to every charge on the bill. Whatever shows up that isn’t yours, notify the card company in writing immediately. Make sure to include in the letter the date in which you notified the company that your card was lost or stolen and send it to the billing errors address. Do not send the letter with your payment. It will get lost in the shuffle.

If your card was a debit card, things may work a bit different. The amount of liability you are responsible for depends directly on how quickly you report it lost or stolen. If it is done before it has been used, again you are not responsible for any fraudulent charges. If you wait, even as little as two business days, you could be held liable for up to $500.00 of any fraudulent charges found on the card.

Once your card is gone and you have reported it, review your bills. Make your bank aware of any questionable deductions from your account that occurred during the time your card was lost or stolen. A phone call is great, but follow it up with a certified letter and include the day you reported your card stolen or lost. This should absolve you of any liability.

The best way to avoid stolen or lost cards is to keep track of them. Know where they are at all times and keep your pin number a secret. Also, don’t use a pin number that is easy to figure out such as your birth date or phone number. Make it a number that only makes sense to you and keep it that way.

We’ve all heard of it. We all know we have one and have probably spent a fair amount of time thinking about it, but the fact of the matter is that most people have never seen theirs. So, what is it? Our credit report. Oddly enough, even though our credit report influences just about every aspect of our financial life, most of us have never even seen ours, let alone know what our FICO or credit score is. Not only will understanding your credit report help you make important financial decisions, it can also help you see just what it is that is keeping you from getting the credit that you may need.
What Is A Credit Report?

A credit report is a document that includes all your pertinent personal and financial information. It will contain your full legal name, your social security number, previous and current addresses, date of birth, and current and previous employers. This information has been obtained from any previous credit applications you have filled out.

This report will also include information about any financial accounts you have now or have had in the past. This will include any loans, credit cards and their credit limits, monthly bills, and so on. It will also include the names of any other persons that may be responsible for payment on these accounts.

Any financial situations that you have been involved in that are public record will also be included. This means that judgements, tax liens, bankruptcies, overdue child support, etc., will also show up on this report.

Inquiries are also marked on your credit report. Anytime you apply for a loan, credit card, or anything that requires an institution to request a copy of your credit report, it will be noted.
What Is My Credit Score and Why Is It Important?

Basically your credit score is based on a mathematical equation that evaluates all the information on your credit report. The end result is called your FICO Score. FICO stands for Fair, Isaac, and Company, the organization that developed the scoring mechanism. This score is what will be used by companies to determine whether you are a safe financial risk or not. In order to even have a FICO score, you must have at least one open account on your credit report and that account needs to have been open for at least six months.

Your score is influenced by your financial history. Outstanding debts past 30 days, consistent late payments on monthly bills, and any collection action that has been brought against you will determine what your score will be. Your credit score will influence not only the decision to give you the loan or credit card, but also the amount of interest to attach to the line of credit. The higher your credit score, the lower your interest rate and vice versa.

Knowing and understanding your credit report is vital to getting a mortgage, car loan, and even renting an apartment or getting a job. If you have never seen your credit report, check it out soon. There is a chance that yours may contain errors and it’s critical that you get those errors cleaned up quickly.

So, you’ve had your credit card for a while. You’ve used it, possibly even too much. Now it is time to start paying it off. Unfortunately, the joy you probably experienced while you were charging up a storm is about to turn into dread. Paying off a credit card is a whole lot harder than charging one. There are some options that you have, as well as some tips to make the whole ugly process go a little smoother.
How To Pay Off A Balance

Of the people who carry a credit card, about one-third of them do not pay off their balance each month. If you’re one of these people, you may have noticed that even though you pay the minimum payment due each month, the balance either never changes or even continues to grow.

Just why does this happen, you may ask? Well, let me let you in on a little secret the credit card companies hope it will take you a long time to figure out. The amount of your minimum payment is usually equal to the interest only that is due on your balance. It may even be less. So, even if you’re paying your minimum amount on time each month, none of that payment is actually going to the principal. At this rate, you’ll never pay off your card. So, let’s go over a couple of tips that may help you put a dent in your balance.

First, quit using your card. If you need to make some changes in your lifestyle, then do it. Unless it is truly an emergency, don’t use your card for anything. Charges will only keep the vicious cycle going.

Pay more than the minimum payment due. For reasons stated above, this is critical to eliminating credit card debt. If you can, transfer your card to a card that has a lower interest rate. These applications come in the mail all the time. Just remember, this new card isn’t for charging. It’s to be used as a tool to pay the balance off.
Payment Agreements

When you apply for any credit, there are several different payment agreements that you can opt for. The first is the revolving agreement. This basically means that you can either pay off the card each month or make only partial payments. If the balance is not paid off though, you will be charged an interest rate on the balance. This is the most popular form of payment agreements.

The second kind is the charge agreement. This is set up so that you are required to pay off the balance in full each month and the third agreement is the installment agreement. This allows you to pay a fixed amount of the balance each month until the balance is paid in full.

Choose a payment option that will work best for you and proceed wisely. Nothing ruins your credit score like a bunch of late payments!

One thing that follows a person around for years is their credit score. If it’s high there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. For millions of people their credit score isn’t ideal and for them something as simple as getting a credit card can be a challenge. That’s why secured credit cards are available. They offer individuals with less than perfect credit the opportunity to get a credit card they usually otherwise would have no chance securing.

It’s difficult to imagine life without a credit card. Not only is it useful for things like renting a car, or booking a hotel room, but in some cases you can’t write a personal check without a credit card number. With secured credit cards, anyone, regardless of their credit past, can get a card that gives them the freedom to travel and more.

There are a few major differences between a typical bank card and one that is secured. The main difference is that with secured credit cards the card holder is required to supply a security deposit. Typically the credit line that is offered with secured credit cards is reflective of the amount of the deposit. So if the individual gave a $500 deposit, they would then have a credit card with a $500 line of credit attached to it. That amount that they give is not used to pay down the balance instead it is viewed as insurance for the secured credit cards in the event the cardholder fails to pay the debt back.

A credit check is usually performed whenever someone applies for any type of loan whether it’s a car loan, mortgage or a line of credit. That is also true with all major credit cards. The person’s credit history is used to determine whether or not they qualify for the card. With secured credit cards, the person’s credit history isn’t a consideration. This is perfect for someone who has struggled with paying their bills late or missed payments in the past.

Although this type of loan is granted to people based on a security deposit it needs to be taken seriously. Secured credit cards should be viewed as a method to rebuilding credit. If the balance is paid in full each month this quickly helps to repair the credit rating. If that’s not possible, monthly payments should always be made on time. This will also help to raise the credit score.

They certainly aren’t for everyone as they generally require a higher rate of interest than a standard card would. For someone who wants to positively affect their credit standing, secured credit cards are viewed as a solid step in the right direction.

You’ve been turned down for a loan or offered a ridiculously high interest rate. You can’t get a new credit card. You’ve got bad credit.
What is ‘bad’ and how can you fix it?

The primary indicator of poor credit worthiness is a low FICO score, around 650 or lower. Below 500 is off the chart. FICO is a number calculated by the three major credit reporting agencies that takes into account total outstanding debt, number and length of late payments, and other factors.

The first steps to correcting the situation are usually highly personal. You may have trouble with self-discipline or find it difficult to keep financial commitments. Those factors may require a counselor or a credit repair specialist.
But other, more practical, steps are in your direct control.

Start by getting a copy of your credit report from all three major agencies: Experian, Trans Union, and Equifax. This can be had yearly for free. Review the documents thoroughly, with the help of a financial expert, if necessary.

No official statistics exist but estimates of credit report errors range from 8%-40%. Some are minor, such as incorrect age, address, and so forth. Some are not, and include accounts shown as open that were long closed, and even debts that were acquired by another person. So make sure that everything on your reports is accurate and up-to-date. But, be honest with yourself. The agencies make concerted efforts to check when pressed.

Make a detailed, realistic budget that includes all monthly expenses and a buffer for unexpected amounts. Then, call your creditors. If you encounter an unsympathetic person, remain polite. Ask for a supervisor, if necessary. Tell them frankly what you can pay and ask for a reduction of the debt. They may not grant your request immediately, but after a few months of steady repayment and a follow-up call they may reconsider. Keep notes of the agreement and keep your word.

Cut up and return as many of your old cards as you sincerely do without. Keep paying on the outstanding balances until the account is zeroed out, or you can convince the creditor to forgive the remaining debt.

Pay off what you can, as you can. Pay off any mortgage loans first. Then proceed to small amount, high APR debt. Pay off those accounts completely. Then move on to larger balances. Do your best to always pay something monthly on every account, though.

When applying for a new card, you have some options. A secured card, for example, is obtainable no matter what your present credit situation. It’s usable just like a regular credit card, but the credit limit is determined by how much actual cash you pay into the account. Remember, this card is for real emergencies only.

Other, non-general purchase, credit cards may be easier to get while you are increasing your credit worthiness. Department store or gasoline cards, used responsibly, are one way to get started improving someone’s view of your level of risk.

Fixing credit worthiness is less like repairing and more like mending. A repair replaces a broken part and you’re on your way. Mending takes time and patience, whether what’s broken is an arm, a sweater, or your credit reputation. Stick with it.

Credit cards are used as forms of payments now more than ever. There are also more online businesses and most of these businesses accept credit card payments. Therefore, protecting your online business from credit card fraud is vital. For businesses that are offline, the challenges of accepting credit cards as payment can be the same. Fraud is such an ugly word and we want to avoid it at all costs. Thankfully, there are steps you can take, whether your business is online or offline, that will help to eliminate your risk of being a victim.

Steps For Online Business Owners

Although most consumers think being a victim of credit card fraud, particularly when purchasing a product online, it is actually much more likely that the merchant will be the victim rather than the consumer. Here are some tips to help you avoid this.

First, always verify that the address the consumer has given you is correct. Your merchant account probably offers an Address Verification System that will verify that the address you have been given matches the billing address of the cardholder.

If you’re shipping a product to a consumer, make sure the shipping address matches the billing address. If it does not, you probably should investigate the transaction.

Be leery of unusual orders. Since a thief would have no idea of the consumers purchasing history with you, if something gets ordered that is completely out of the ordinary check it out. Phone the customer if you can. Even if it’s legitimate, they should be grateful that you called.

Take as much information from the buyer as you can when they are filling out the order form. In addition to their name, address, and telephone number, ask for the name of the bank that the card is issued from as well as the 3 or 4 security digits that all cards have now.

State on your web site that you have anti fraud devices in place and operating at all times. This will give the thief pause before entering your web page.

Steps For Offline Business Owners

Since you are actually going to see the person that is trying to use the credit card, your chances of being a victim of fraud are diminished, but problems can still happen. Here are some tips to help protect you and your business from credit card fraud.

Never take a credit card without getting identification. Check the name and signature to see if they match. This will not offend most customers who are on the up and up. Most will even be grateful.

Check the credit card for forgery by knowing what characteristics are found on legitimate cards. Many cards now contain a hologram that changes color in the light. Check the signature panel to make sure the signature cannot be erased. If it can, it’s fake. Look for the magnetic strip and make sure it is intact.

You should also use the Address Verification Service. This will help you as well.

The days of waiting for weeks for a credit card application are over. Today, anyone can get a credit card approved instantly. It’s very easy to apply online for an instant approval credit card. Hundreds of credit card companies claim they can give you the best credit card available for your needs, instantly. An easy way to apply for this type of card is online, at the credit card company’s website. No, that doesn’t mean you can download a credit card to use immediately. What it does mean is that your credit card application can usually be approved within minutes.

The approval process takes, as stated above, only a few minutes, but it takes time before you actually receive your credit card in the mail. It’s usually about a week to ten days before it arrives. Though you can’t use your new credit card within that time frame, you do have the advantage of knowing it has been approved.

With instant approval credit cards you have the convenience of receiving your card quickly. In times past, you had to apply for the card and wait weeks while your credit history was run and the approval process took place. On top of that time frame, you had to wait for the credit card company to send out your card. Applying for an instant approval credit card is fast and convenience in today’s market.

One advantage of applying for an instant approval credit card online is that you can research a wide range of credit cards to find the one that is best for you. You can compare interest rates and fees freely and also check for other advantages and disadvantages of the cards you are considering.

There are limits on the applicants who are eligible for instant approval credit cards. Originally, these cards were targeted at consumers who had a perfect credit history. If your credit rating is excellent, you won’t have any trouble being instantly approved. Today things are a little different. The competition between credit card companies is very high and there are some companies who are willing to take the risk on a less than perfect applicant in order to get their business. What this means is that you may be instantly approved even if your credit rating is less than perfect. If this is the case and you are approved, use extreme caution and make sure you pay all of your payments on time to assure your credit history is protected.

If you wish to apply for an instant approval credit card online, use a search engine to search for ‘instant credit card approval’, or ‘instant approval credit cards’. The results will be more than you wished for. Then, compare the annual and membership fees, interest rates and other advantages and disadvantages of the cards you are considering. Once you find the best card for you, click on ‘apply’ fill out the online form and click the ’submit’ button. You will have your answer within a few minutes.

Do you have heavy credit card debt? If so, you can save some big money by taking advantage of credit card transfers. With balance transfer credit cards you can take advantage of teaser rates that are offered several times each year by major credit card companies. Teaser rates are usually good for three to six months after you receive the card. Rates can range from 0% to 9% and they are beneficial to credit card holders who have large debts on credit cards with higher interest rates. By transferring the balance from the high interest card to the teaser card, you will save big money on interest.

Be sure to remember that most banks treat transfers identical to cash advances. Also, the transfer may be subject to daily interest fees, which can add up quickly and often there is no grace period where interest isn’t charged. The costs of transferring a large balance in these cases can be astronomical. Try to choose a teaser card that waives transfer charges for balance transfers in the initial promotional period.

Always read the fine print when applying for a credit card. Be aware of the term ‘flat balance transfer’, which will cost you fees on all balance transfers. You must be knowledgeable of the cost of all balance transfers. If you find nothing on the credit card application, ask a banking representative if there are any flat balance transfer fees.

Take advantage of the credit card grace period. Transfer the balance on your high interest card to the teaser card before the payment due date that appears on your bill. Most credit card companies offer a grace period of between 25 and 30 days. After the due date, interest is charged on the outstanding balance. If you transfer the balance before the due date, you will save money on interest. Some credit card companies offer no grace period. In this case, you are charged interest from the moment you charge an item or from the day you transfer your balance. Do not apply for credit cards that do not offer a grace period.

After you have transferred your balance to the low interest teaser card, you will receive a bill with a payment due date. Always pay before the due date and always pay more than the minimum payment, which is the lowest payment you can make if you wish to keep your card and your credit history in good standing. Credit card companies are ecstatic when you only make minimum payments. Why? Because minimum payments usually pay only the accrued interest or a portion of it. That means that the principal remains at the same amount that it was before you made your payment. This is the way that credit card companies rake in huge profits. Minimum payments extend the principal amount for months or years. Each month you pay a minimum payment, it is taken off the interest. The following month, the credit card company charges the interest again and you pay it - again and again and… Well, you get the idea. If you pay only the minimum payment, it will take years to pay off credit card debt.

Balance transfer credit cards are a good short term strategy, but don’t use it over an extended period of time. Be sure to check out all options before playing the balance transfer game. If not, you will find that you have created a financial nightmare that has no end.

Once the decision has been made to obtain a credit card, applying for it is the next logical step. Not only can you apply for a card through the mail or over the phone, most credit card companies now offer their application services online. Either way, the basic information that you will need is the same.

Applying Online

First things first, find the right card for you. Not all cards offer the same interest rates and incentives so pick the one with terms and conditions that match your needs. Then simply go to that issuer’s web site and click on the “Apply” link. The application appears and you’re ready to get started.

Besides asking for routine personal identifiers such as your driver’s license number, social security number, date of birth, and current address, you will probably have to supply details regarding your employment, salary, banking relationships and other credit obligations.

Once the application is complete, the approval time can vary. Some card companies will offer you instant approval while others may take a week or two. The rate at which you are approved is generally based on your credit history. Once you have been approved, they will notify you by e-mail, mail, or phone.

Applying online is not only safe and secure, but pretty quick too. No waiting for the mail to travel back and forth between the two of you. All necessary correspondence can be done by e-mail.

Applying By Mail or In Person

Since we do get most of our offers for credit cards through the mail, this gives you the opportunity to sit with many different offers on paper right in front of you. Now you can take the time to read each offer in depth in order to decide what card fits your needs without using the computer at all.

All of the card offers will come with an application attached to it and, again, all you need to do is fill it out and return it. The paper applications will ask for the same details that the online ones do, so have your info handy. The approval process when applying by mail can take a little longer since the traditional mail service is not as quick as the web. You should still be able to have an answer in as little as two weeks or so.

Another option is to go to your local bank branch and apply for a card in person. This is virtually the same application process again, only you are dealing with a bank platform employee. The wait time for approval may be a bit quicker since the bank can easily check your credit history and knows your financial status.

Any of the application processes will work. Just be cautious when choosing a card and don’t apply for too many at once. Each credit check by the different card companies will show up on your credit report and too many hits are perceived as a negative.

Yes, you’ve gotten literally hundreds of credit card applications in the mail and each and every one of them has said you have been pre-approved. Of course it is natural that this would lead us to believe that the application process is simply a formality. After all, you’ve been approved already so no worries, right? Wrong! Many of the offers that say you’re pre-approved don’t actually mean for the credit card. I know it’s misleading, but what they’re really saying is that you’ve been approved to apply for your card, not actually receive one. Your actual approval will depend on several different things, any of which can keep you off the receiving end. We’ll go over some of the reasons for rejection and what, if anything, can be done about them.

Why You Were Rejected

The most probable answer is your credit score. Although several other things may have been taken into consideration, such as your salary or time on your job, your credit score is usually the biggie. The catch here is that your credit history doesn’t even have to be bad, it can be blank and that will work against you just as much as a bad score will. Having no credit is almost as bad as having bad credit since the credit card companies have no reference point to see just how you will handle your credit account.

If you have a history of making late payments on bills and other loans, that will work against you. The credit card company wants to know that you are a worthwhile risk before they issue you a card.

As I mentioned above, other issues also come into play. If you have just started a new job, a creditor may want to wait a while to make sure that you keep it. These are other factors that will be considered if your credit history is less than perfect but not a total loss.

What To Do

Clean up your credit history! This is the single best step you can take in improving your options when it comes to credit cards and other types of loans as well.

Most creditors are required to tell you why you were rejected and what credit bureau they used to access your report. You may be entitled to a free copy of your credit report if the data contained on it was used to deny your application. Check with the credit bureau to see.

If your credit rating is poor, take action. Start paying your bills on time. See about consolidating your bills so you can afford to pay the monthly amount. Eliminate any extra spending that isn’t necessary and use that towards your outstanding debts. Yes, this could take some time, but in the long run it will be worth it.

Once you have cleaned up your credit a bit or established some basic credit, let some time pass. Apply for the card again. Once the creditor sees how hard you have been working to get your credit report up to par, you may just be rewarded for your efforts. Be careful, though. The last thing you want to do is go overboard with new credit and dig yourself into a financial hole!

Oddly enough, not only will bad credit work against you when applying for a loan or a credit card, but no credit will too. Even though this doesn’t seem fair, it is the way things work in the complicated world of consumer credit. Lenders are leery about opening accounts for people with no credit history because they simply have nothing to base your reliability on.

So, if you can’t build a credit history without credit and you can’t get credit without a credit history, just what has a person to do? It’s nearly impossible to rent a car, stay in a hotel, or shop online without a credit card, so let’s explore a few of the options that can eliminate this Catch-22.

Available Credit Options

Although many of the major credit card companies won’t give you a card without a credit history, some smaller ones, like department stores, will. Find a department store that will issue you a card and apply for it. You can try getting a gas station card also. Either way, use your card but be sure to make all payments on time. Your goal is to build a good credit history, not just get a credit card.

Find a credit card company that will review your overall financial situation and not just your credit history. Some lenders will look at your employment history, your housing situation, and how often you have moved. If this is all on the up and up, they may approve your application. Again, use this card wisely.

Credit Unions

If you are a credit union member, or are eligible for membership, see what their card issuing terms are. Although they are no giving out cards with their eyes closed, they will often have more relaxed conditions for members. You no longer have to work for a specific company to be eligible to join a credit union. So it’s well worth checking if there’s one in your area.

Secured Credit Cards

Secured credit cards are offered by lenders who will give you a line of credit that either matches, or is slightly higher than, a cash deposit that you give them to hold. As your experience with the card grows, these lenders will often raise your limit without requiring you to increase your deposit. Eventually, you can use your experience with this lender to apply for cards that are not secured.

Student Credit Cards

If you are a student, then you’ll be best off with a student credit card. Student credit cards can be a great way of building the credit history that you will need to depend upon after graduation. The important thing here is to remember to use that opportunity wisely. Many banks will issue college students a credit card, especially banks that are located in college or university cities and towns.

When you do manage to get a credit card, remember that you are establishing a credit history. Show that you are a good financial risk by paying the bill on time. Don’t go crazy with the spending. It will only cause you problems in the future.
